Attractions

There is so much to do in the area – here are some of the activities we can recommend. Please let us know if you find activities you think others will enjoy

Theatre by the lake

www.theatrebythelake.com

This is a contemporary theatre with 2 stages for modern and classical work. It has a café and bar.

It really is one of the loveliest theatres we know set on the shores of Derwentwater and walkable from the Little Slate House – just follow the signs to the lake from the town center. Great for a morning coffee overlooking the lake.

Alhambra cinema

www.keswickalhambra.co.uk

This unique, 100-year-old cinema is within walking distance of the Little Slate House.

The cinema is open 7 days a week and offers free tea and coffee and reasonably priced snacks and drinks. There is an audio induction loop and wheelchair access.

The cinema offers parent and baby / relaxed screenings.

Lakeland Hauntings

www.lakelandhauntings.co.uk

The walk starts and ends at the Moot Hall, Keswick. All tickets must be booked in advance. You need to arrive in good time and be aware that there are no facilities on route, so visit the toilets before you set off! The walks last about 1hour 30 minutes. There are some steps and inclines.

The ghost walks are written with an adult audience in mind but are ok for children 10 years and above. You will experience an evening walk through the town with frequent stops for the telling of ghostly tales from Keswick.

Derwentwater

www.getonthelake.co.uk

The lake is a short walk from the Little Slate House; follow signs from the town center.

Derwentwater can be explored by canoes, sailing boats, kayaks, paddleboards, and windsurfers.

The lake offers a lot of access points for wild swimming. There is a footpath around the lake.

Keswick Launch co. offers lake cruises and boat hire. For details of times and fares go to keswick-launch.co.uk. The full-boat trip takes about 50 minutes but you can disembark at any of the 8 jetties en route to enjoy a walk to some well-known landmarks.

Kong climbing wall

Kongadventure.com

This is a good option for a rainy day. There is a range of climbing walls and instructors who can help. Children can use the bouldering room for as long as they like under the supervision of a parent or guardian.

The Escape Room is a great challenge for a small group. It has a mountain theme, challenging you to work together to solve a series of puzzles to rescue the stranded climber and escape the room.

Lakeland Whiskey distillery

www.lakesdistillery.com

This distillery is set in a beautiful location on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, just a short drive from the Little Slate House.

Tours of the distillery can be booked followed by tastings. Apparently, in 2020 a whiskey and chocolate tasting tour is being introduced. Sounds good!

There is a shop and bistro on site. Booking is essential.

Keswick Pencil Museum.

This museum has been described as a cult favorite, especially in rainy weather. It is a bright space that tells the story of Keswick’s pencil industry since 1550.

There are lots of good stories contained in the exhibits. There are also pots of pencils and paper on tables and how-to-draw guides. The gift shop is more of an art shop, well stocked with colored pencils as you might imagine!

Cycle hire

https://whinlatterbikes.com

https://www.keswickbikes.co.uk/bike-e-bike-hire/

There are lots of opportunities to hire bikes in Keswick and the surrounding area.

Parks

Fitz Park

Just a few minutes stroll from Keswick Market Square Fitz Park has a riverside setting with glorious open views towards Skiddaw and Latrigg and is an ideal spot for picnics. The Lower Park has a large open recreational area, cricket pavilion and fantastic children's playground as well as a multi-use games area and BMX track. The upper park is a smaller formal area with a bowling green, grass tennis courts and putting green and an arboretum. For inquiries about opening hours of the games at Fitz Park tel 017687 73445.

Hope Park

Located between the town center and Derwentwater, Hope Park's beautiful garden makes it a favorite place to visit en route to and from the lake. There is plenty of seating where you can just relax and watch the world go by. It also offers traditional games and a cafe.

Whinlatter Forest Park

Don't miss a visit to Whinlatter Forest, England's only true mountain forest. It is located just up the hill from the village of Braithwaite just outside Keswick. There is a wonderful adventure playground laid out as a trail through the forest where children can explore the natural environment. It includes an archimedes screw, secret doors in trees and a series of pulleys to move millions of little pebbles. Whinlatter is home to a number of graded walks, running trails and cycle tracks. You can take your own bike or hire one there from Cyclewise. For those over ten, there's treetop adventure with Go Ape, a high-level journey along bridges, and zip slides 40 feet high in the air or Forest Segway.
